The Adjutant General reported to the Governor periodically on the organization, condition, and operations of the militia. Besides detailed information on the different militia, topics also include, but are not limited to, armaments, equipment, uniforms, encampments, training, federal and state appropriations, legislative recommendations, war service records, results of investigations, active service calls, inspection and musters, target practice, decorations and medals awarded, and financial statements. Rosters of troops and general orders issued are also present. The information is presented in both narrative and tabular form. In addition, later reports summarize duties and activities by division and contain photographs. The reports may be published annually, biennially, or quadrennially. The reports cover activities of the State Troops, the National Guard, the Naval Militia, the State Guard, and the Military Academy. The Department was called the Department of Military and Naval Affairs from 1936 to 1951 and the Adjutant General's Office from 1819 to 1936.
